dawn chorus introduction

This is the beginning of a new series of talks, dawn chorus. It will be a series inspired by nature. Whatever happens to inspire me on the day, I shall talk about. But in this episode I want to give an introduction.

Nature is the greatest master when it comes to spirituality. Our spiritual essence is our natural self, before the factors of civilisation have influenced us. We need to get back in touch with our own nature. That is what the spiritual journey is all about and the easiest, surest way to do that is to spend time in the rest of nature, surrounded by plants, animals, the natural landscape. Nature is the greatest master, and if we open to it, if we allow the energy of the natural world to influence us, if we allow it in, into our hearts, then no other master is needed. For human masters use words and thoughts, concepts, ideas, and all of this is such a roundabout way to get to our essence, which is beyond words. It was there long before words came into existence. It will be there long after they have died away. Our essence is natural. It is shared, shared with the seagull which is flying overhead as I speak, back from a fishing mission with a stomach full, ready for a night’s sleep.

Nature is simple, uncomplicated, and we too should return to a simple way of being, an uncomplicated life. This allows our spirit to soar. It allows what is really important within us to grow, to come to the fore. Nature will help this to happen. So I urge you, spend time in nature. Allow yourself to be inspired by her, as I have been. Become natural.
